I think there's so much to be said for portraiture, like this, that is a faithful document of a person's face as it is, as they are, without excessive amounts of "wait, let me put on my camera-face for you."
In a sense, images like this really become *for* the sitter -- a document, a point of reference for later in life, to see how he was, who he was in a period of time. Posed or composed "camera-face" shots are for others, a show for the world at large of how the sitter wants to be seen. We all do this, I think, don masks when someone wants to take our picture. I think the sitter shows an uncommon kind of confidence -- and trust in you as his documentarian/photographer -- to create an image that is an honest and compassionate rendering of "me, right now, mask off".
